How to Use Metabolic Techniques to Make Your Training More Intense!!!!!
So this article right here is going to sort of piggyback off of the last article I wrote in regards to changes that one should make as they age. One way to add some variety and make a workout harder WITHOUT increasing the load is to include some different metabolic techniques in your training that will create just an additional and different stimulus that can oftentimes save our joints as we age. Not only that, but oftentimes these techniques can do wonders to skyrocket your metabolism as a by product.
There are many different techniques that we can use, but the main ones that I personally include in my training and with clients are static holds (isometrics), negatives and bodyweight movements throughout a given workout. So for example, I may do a set of fly’s but I will take 3-4 seconds to go down on each rep. I may be able to use 70’s for a set of 10, but if I include slow negatives I may only be able to use 50’s, but guess what!!! Those 50 lb dumbbells felt harder than those 70’s that I may be slinging around, and the key here is hard muscular contractions and time under tension. I promise you that the pump you get from a set of negatives is muuuuch harder and stronger than a regular set!!!
The second technique that I often include are static holds, generally at the end of a set. So lets say that same set of fly’s I hit for a set of 10, I would drop the work weight by say 25 percent then hold a outer stretch for anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds of constant tension!!!! Remember key word number 1 is time under tension and that is one sure fire way to light your workout up.
And lastly we have something that I have been doing for quite some time and that is to add simple bodyweight movements in between exercises. So lets take a chest day for example, after each exercise do 2-3 sets of pushups until failure!!! DO THIS AFTER EVERY EXERCISE before moving to the next. You may end up doing 300 plus pushups in that session, but the goal here is to add some intensity while saving your joints and to also get your heart rate up a bit. Its called training for a reason and we need to create a stimulus for our body to respond.
So here are 3 different advanced metabolic techniques that I have been using to increase the intensity of my sessions. Try them out and I promise you will have one hell of a workout!!!
